CEMEX has recently contributed to the Autostrada A1--the Amber Highway--an important project that will connect the major Baltic coast ports with the southern and central parts of Poland, supplying bridge and paving concrete. The Autostrada A1 is part of the trans-European corridor linking Scandinavia with countries in southern Europe.

"This portion of the Amber Highway was constructed in sections 1000-2200 meters long performed within 30-72 hour windows,” said Slawomir Dobrowolski, CEMEX Director of the Ready-mix Mobile Plants Division in Poland and President of CEMEX Infrastruktura. Key to the success of this project was the close cooperation with the client to coordinate very specific logistical conditions, according to Dobrowolski. He explained that, because each section was paved in two layers, a specialized technical solution was necessary. “We erected two mobile ready-mix plants at each section which could independently produce 4,000-7,000 m3 of ready-mix concrete for each layer,” Dobrowolski said.
Also, CEMEX was selected to serve as the main contractor for the design and reconstruction of 400 meters of roadway in Trzebinia, Poland. Thanks to the superior versatility of CEMEX’s high-quality modern concrete solutions, the street was open to heavy vehicle traffic just five days after the concrete mix was placed. The opening ceremony for the reconstructed road was attended by local and neighboring authorities as well as representatives from CEMEX, in a show of support.
“Both projects represent a great example of close cooperation with our customers. As always, our team listened to the customers, understanding their challenges, and providing valuable solutions accompanied by unparalleled 24-hour customer service,” said Marcelo Catala, President of CEMEX Poland. “We treat each of our customers as partners and we grow our footprint closer to them to best address their needs with sustainable tailored solutions that will create value for them and for CEMEX.”

Positive experience in Poland and worldwide supports the increasing construction of concrete roadways. Greater durability, better visibility—especially at night, absence of rutting and deformation, and resistance to severe weather and high axle loads are among the main advantages of concrete roads. Moreover, concrete roads enjoy a lifetime of up to 40 years, with less need for maintenance or repair. Their costs of construction is close to or lower than asphalt with the added advantage of low price variation resulting from the use of local raw materials.
