CEMEX Participates in One of Poland’s Main Expressways
July 6, 2017
CEMEX is participating in the construction of the major S7 Expressway in Poland by supplying over 400,000 cubic meters of concrete. This cross-country expressway connects the Baltic coast to cities such as Warsaw, Kraków, and the Slovakian border region.
To improve the highway’s traffic flow and road safety, one of the stretches of the S7 Expressway involved the construction of a 920-meter-long bridge on the Koszwaly to Nowy Dwor Gdanski section over the Vistula River, in northern Poland. This bridge is located over a depression of weak organic soil, which required a thorough cleaning, preparation, and reinforcement of the ground through the construction of special concrete piles manufactured at the construction site.
CEMEX installed two mobile concrete plants on site to better meet the needs of this comprehensive project. With an average daily production of approximately 1,500 cubic meters, reaching up to 2,500 cubic meters in peak periods, these plants will allow CEMEX to supply 410,000 cubic meters of concretes. For this project, CEMEX is expected to supply over one million tons of aggregates.
Several technologies were necessary for this project: Sliding technology to move the pre-finished structure of the bridge from the bridgehead to further supports; and overhang technology, which consists of independent concreting of segments on both sides of the cantilevered section of the bridge. Additionally, high architectural concrete technology was used to shape the concrete elements of all exposed surfaces of this construction project.
Exacting safety standards allowed the concrete work to be performed securely, even during snow-melt season, when the Vistula River reaches its highest levels and water partially floods depressed areas.
“This is one of the key infrastructure road projects currently under development in Poland, and we are proud to play our part in it,” said Sławomir Dobrowolski, Director of CEMEX Poland Mobile Ready-Mix Plants. “This project shows CEMEX’s ability to improve the quality and safety of our roads and, thereby, contribute to a better future.”
